腦中風病人應盡快開始進行復康治療，第一個目的是防止併發症。
如:關節僵硬，跌倒，褥瘡及肺炎。
腦中風病人的殘疾情度是根據的腦部受影響的部分和嚴重程度來分辨的。

腦中風後首六個月是黃金期– 能為最大的神經功能恢復和改善。從以後的半年，恢復進度比其他18個月將開始放緩。因此，關鍵是要把握好黃金康復期的首六個月。如果提能夠供足夠的臨床護理予患者在四肢力量，意識和自覺性顯著改善神經功能。

腦中風康復的目標是幫助患者重新獲得開展日常生活的基本活動的能力，使他們能夠實現最多的功能和獨立性。康復後，患者有望恢復到一個積極和富有成效的生活。

儘管腦中風康復無法逆轉腦的損傷，透過精心指導，系統的康復計劃可以大大幫助患者達到他們正常生活的最大潛力。
